Title: Double-blind comparison of addition of a second mood stabilizer versus an antidepressant to an initial mood stabilizer for treatment of patients with bipolar depression. Reference: Am J Psychiatry 2000;157:124-6. Purpose: Comparing the addition of an antidepressant versus a second mood stabilizer for the treatment of bipolar depression in patients treated with lithium carbonate or divalproex sodium. Study design: Randomized, double-blinded trial. Follow up: 6 weeks. Patients: 27 patients. Treatment: Paroxetine or second mood stabiliser. Results: Both treatment groups showed significant improvement in depressive symptoms during the 6-week trial. There were significantly more noncompleters in the group treated with two mood stabilizers compared with the number of noncompleters in the group treated with a mood stabilizer and paroxetine.
