Quetiapine versus valproate in mania Authors: Fleck DE, et al. Title: Efficacy and safety of quetiapine compared with divalproex sodium for treatment of acute mania. Reference: Presented at the 42nd ACNP annual meeting 2003. [Congress poster] Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of increased dosages of quetiapine compared with divalproex in acute mania. Study design: Randomized, rater-blinded study. Follow up: two weeks. Patients: 20 patients (11 quetiapine, 9 divalproex). Treatment: Quetiapine increased from 150 mg to >400 mg or divalproex mean final dose of 1,607 mg/day. Results: There was a significant and similar reduction in overall and manic symptoms in patients receiving either treatment groups over time. Significant decreases in depressive symptoms were only observed in the quetiapine group. Both treatments were well tolerated. |
