SSRIs and switching in young bipolar patients

Purpose: To assess the risk and benefits of SSRI treatment in young patients with bipolar depression. 
Study design: Retrospective chart review.

Patients: 59 children with bipolar I depression (mean age 11 years).
Treatment: SSRI treatment in a naturalistic setting.
Results: SSRI therapy increased the rate of improvement of bipolar depression in young patients, but was associated with a 3-fold increase in the relative risk of manic symptomatology.
